LASIK and Excimer laser surgery
Lasik and Excimer laser surgery can be used for correction of short
and far-sightedness and astigmatism. The precision of the Excimer
Laser accurately modifies the shape of the cornea, correcting both
myopia and astigmatism. This laser can also be used in selected
cases to correct presbyopia.
The procedure takes about 5-10 minutes and no hospital stay is
required.

Cataract surgery
Cataract surgery is performed under local anaesthetic on a day
surgery basis. Hospitalisation is not required.
The lens is enclosed in a capsule which holds it in place. Cataract
surgery is done using an operating microscope, and involves opening
the front of the capsule, removing the cataractous lens and leaving
the back portion of the capsule in place. The lens is either removed
in one piece (extracapsular cataract extraction) through a large
incision, or it is broken into small fragment using a tiny
ultrasound probe, and then aspirated through a small incision (phacoemulsification).
Small incision surgery has become the method of choice in recent
year. A small incision is much gentler to your eye, required no
stitches, causes less inflammation and less astigmatism, is
associated with more rapid visual recovery and a quick return to
your normal activities.
Laser surgery
Different types of laser are used in ophthalmology. Laser can used
to treat diabetic eye disease and may prevent blindness in some
advanced cases. Lasers are also used to seal retinal tears; to clear
a thickened posterior capsules (should this occur after cataract
surgery); to treat certain types of glaucoma; and to treat tearing
problems caused by blocked tear ducts.
Blindness from glaucoma can be prevented by laser therapy and/or
special surgery.
Retinal and vitreous surgery
This type of surgery is performed for retinal detachments and also
for removing blood in the eye caused by various factors, such as
trauma, retinal tears or diabetic eye disease.

The Centre has available a number of tests which can be performed to
exclude various eye conditions including refractive errors, glaucoma
and diabetic eye problems.
