AsiaMedic PET Centre offers GE's Discovery ST PET/CT scanner, an integrated PET/CT system completely optimized for both cardiac and cancer care. This system integrates a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner with a multi-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and is capable of 2D and 3D imaging. This Discovery ST system provides physicians with more sensitivity, speed, resolution and diagnostic confidence when treating cancer patients. PET/CT imaging is a powerful and exciting imaging technology that holds great promise in cancer management.
Additional uses of PET/CT imaging include:
- Cancer Diagnosis and Staging PET is an
extremely sensitive method for detecting cancers and assessing
cancer spread (also known as staging). PET imaging can be used
for the staging of lung cancer, head and neck cancer, colorectal
cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, lymphoma, and many other
cancers. The whole body can be scanned in a single examination
to reveal the primary cancer sites as well as other metastatic
(spread) sites.
- Differentiation between
malignant and benign growths PET is capable of accurate
location of lesions, identification of benign versus malignant
lesions, and differentiation from scar tissue.
- Monitoring of treatment
response PET is able to detect response to
Chemotheraphy much earlier than CT or MRI. Therefore, it
provides information to aid in surgical and radiation treatment
planning. It also enables the physicians to determine the
effectiveness of treatment and to alter treatment regimes if
necessary.
- Detection of cancer
recurrence PET is the most sensitive method for
detecting early recurrence and metastatic spread in many
cancers. Early detection of cancer recurrence allows early
initiation of treatment.
- Differentiation between
cancer recurrence and post therapy structural change
Since PET imaging detects metabolic changes rather than
structural changes, it is more specific than CT or MRI and is
able to distinguish cancer recurrence from post therapy
structural changes. This allows doctors to decide if further
treatment is necessary.
- Assessment of brain
disorder PET can also be used for the assessment of
brain metabolism and hence capable of the diagnosis of
Alzheimers diseases and other causes of dementia.
While MRI and CT scans provide anatomic imaging of the physical
structure of the body, and a PET scan provides a metabolic imaging
that detects abnormalities in cell tissues based on cellular
metabolism, an integrated PET/CT scan produces a combined image of
the organs metabolism AND structure, allowing us to better
understand the changes in the body. Further benefits of PET/CT
consist of:
- High clinical sensitivity for improved lesion
detectability
- Enhanced HD resolution without compromise
- Greater peace of mind for patients and their
families, knowing that this technology provides comprehensive
information
- Diagnostic confidence for those suspected to have
cancer, and those who are undergoing cancer treatments
