Pre-Exercise Screening Plans

Regular exercise improves our physical fitness, prevents cardiovascular diseases and reduces the risk of dying from a heart attack. Nevertheless, the incidence of cardiac arrest during exercise in patients with heart disease is 10 times that of otherwise healthy persons. Sudden cardiac arrest can be the first clinical presentation of an underlying cardiovascular disease and can occur in previously well persons.

According to international and local guidelines, individuals may benefit from a medical assessment and an exercise stress ECG before embarking on leisure or competitive sports activities. Therefore, adequate screening is important to identify at risk individuals before they begin exercising at moderate to vigorous levels.
